Ajoke David was on the show this morning to share more parenting tips. Ajoke is the founder and the Director of Education,Aquila Nidus Montessori School.
Choosing words that help develop your kids. According to Ajoke, it is important for a child to have personal power because they need to have some sort of control over areas of their lives and we need them to be able to make responsible choices in life because whilst they are young, the consequences of wrong choices are very safe but when they grow older, those consequences become more and more dangerous.
Sometimes children out act when they feel they have no sort of control over their life.
Here are some words parents should be intentional about when helping to develop their children’s personal power.
From when a toddler can actually choose, it is important to allow them to make decisions on what they want to wear, eat, watch etc.
- Giving them limited choices and they get to empower themselves to make multiple choices. When they practice making little choices every day, they get better.
- Use words intentionally like, decides, choose or pick because a lot of children don’t have an awareness that they actually choose their own attitude or that they are responsible for their behaviour.
When we use words over and over then the child understands that they are actually the ones choosing their attitude and behaviour and no one makes them do it.
Offer safe choices but limited to your children and when they grow older you can then increase them to enable them to take responsibility and make great choices for themselves.
