Manchester City’s star forward, Erling Haaland, has clinched the Premier League Golden Boot for the 2023-24 season, confirming his status as the league’s top scorer. Haaland netted 27 goals this season, surpassing Chelsea’s Cole Palmer by five goals and Newcastle’s Alexander Isak by six.
Haaland’s performance has been remarkable despite facing some challenges, including missing 10 games due to a foot fracture. His impressive tally of goals has been crucial in leading Manchester City to their fourth consecutive Premier League title, as they finished the season with a total of 96 goals.
This marks Haaland’s second consecutive Golden Boot win, making him the first player since Harry Kane to achieve this feat back-to-back. Previously, Kane scored 25 goals in the 2015-16 season and 29 in 2016-17. Haaland’s achievement puts him alongside Premier League legends like Alan Shearer, Thierry Henry, and Robin van Persie.
Haaland has scored 63 goals in 66 league appearances since joining Manchester City from Borussia Dortmund in June 2022 for £51.2 million. Despite some criticism this season, including comments from Roy Keane comparing his general play to that of a lower league player, Haaland has proven his worth on the pitch. Former players and pundits, including Chris Sutton and Gary Lineker, have defended his contributions, emphasizing his unparalleled goal-scoring abilities.
In addition to his Premier League success, Haaland has been a prolific scorer in all competitions, with 52 goals in his first season and 41 in the current season for club and country. He also contributed five Premier League assists this season.
Haaland’s 27 goals this season included 25 from inside the penalty area, with four headers and seven penalties. Notably, he scored 20 goals with his left foot, matching his previous season’s achievement and joining a rare group of players who have scored 20 or more left-footed goals in a Premier League season.
As Haaland continues to break records and defy expectations, former City forward Daniel Sturridge believes there’s more to come. “Haaland will only get better,” he said, signaling more challenges ahead for City’s rivals in the 2024-25 season.
