AST SpaceMobile is gearing up to launch five satellites into low-Earth orbit this summer, offering smartphone connectivity via satellite with enough bandwidth for video calls.
Over the past year, AST SpaceMobile has showcased voice calls, texts, and video calls via satellite using 4G LTE and 5G connections, achieving download speeds of up to 14Mbps. Now, the company has finalized a definitive commercial agreement with AT&T, aligning with its memorandum of understanding, just in time for the launch of its first five commercial satellites.
The FCC has initiated a framework for companies interested in developing similar services, aiming for a unified network future, as emphasized by Chairwoman Jessica Rosenworcel. With AST SpaceMobile’s satellites set to launch from Cape Canaveral, commercial service previously demonstrated will be enabled, although no adjustments addressing light pollution issues have been mentioned.
Apple has already integrated satellite-based messaging links into the iPhone, and Android is preparing for similar features. The addition of high-speed satellite connections could revolutionize connectivity, potentially eliminating dead zones. With Starlink also exploring satellite-to-cellular links, the future promises seamless connectivity across all regions.
“One of the things that is most impressive to the [FirstNet] Authority and to the AT&T personnel here is the level of diligence by which this solution is being envisioned and deployed,” said Mohammad Baig, @ATT‘s Lead Market Development Manager for @FirstNet, during a visit to… pic.twitter.com/p0EO4aOn8T
