Google introduces a new AI conversation practice feature to help English language learners improve their speaking skills. This feature enables users to have interactive conversations with an AI bot, allowing them to practice English in real-time.
Initially launched in October 2023, the speaking practice experience began with feedback on spoken sentences. It has since expanded to support ongoing conversations in the language learners are studying. Currently, the feature is accessible to Search Labs users in Argentina, Colombia, India, Mexico, Venezuela, and Indonesia, and may also appear when translating to or from English on Android devices.
The new feature offers English-only feedback and conversation practice for now, leveraging Google’s translation and definition capabilities as valuable tools for language learners. While Google does not offer a comprehensive language learning curriculum like apps such as Duolingo, Babbel, or Pimsleur, its speaking practice function assists learners in finding the most suitable words and conjugations for conversations.
AI-assisted language learning is becoming more common, with other platforms like Duolingo incorporating AI chatbots and GPT-4 technology to enhance learning experiences. Memrise also uses a GPT-3-based chatbot on Discord to facilitate language practice.
Despite the lack of a specific roadmap for Google’s language learning plans, its speaking practice feature holds promise for expanding to more countries. Users seeking authentic language conversation practice may find this tool particularly beneficial, even as other language learning apps continue to innovate in this space.
