The earthquake’s impact on Marrakesh, Morocco’s historic district and UNESCO World Heritage site, has been devastating. Buildings and walls have crumbled, complicating rescue efforts, and public squares have transformed into emergency shelters. In this dire situation, both the Morocco national football team and Cristiano Ronaldo have extended a helping hand.

Marrakesh, the fourth-largest city in Morocco, experienced a destructive 6.8-magnitude earthquake on September 8, 2023. Tragically, this disaster struck 72 kilometers southwest of Marrakesh, resulting in over 2,000 fatalities and numerous injuries. Entire villages in the Atlas mountain range were wiped out.

The city now faces turmoil as survivors urgently seek shelter. Many countries, organizations, and businesses in Marrakesh have offered aid. Remarkably, Cristiano Ronaldo, the former Real Madrid and Manchester United star, has joined this humanitarian effort.

According to Marca, Ronaldo’s upscale Marrakesh hotel is offering refuge to the earthquake’s homeless victims. Pestana CR7 Marrakesh, a four-star hotel, boasts amenities like an outdoor pool, fitness center, restaurant, and terrace, providing a comfortable haven for those in need.

One Spanish national, Irene Seixas, remarked, “We had to come to the new area of Marrakesh, where there are more luxury hotels, so to speak. Now we have managed to get Cristiano Ronaldo’s hotel, which is on the outskirts, to give us a room. Pestana CR7, a 174-room hotel owned by Portuguese star, Cristiano Ronaldo, in Marrakesh, Morocco has become a refuge site for the survivors of earthquake in the country.”

The massive 6.8-magnitude earthquake struck the mountainous High Atlas region of Morocco, approximately 45 miles from Marrakech, on Friday. As of Saturday evening, the earthquake has claimed the lives of at least 1,305 people, leaving many more injured or missing.

Amidst the chaos and tragedy, various organizations and businesses based in Marrakech have extended their assistance to the earthquake victims. One such entity is Pestana CR7 Marrakech, a hotel owned by the renowned Portuguese footballer Cristiano Ronaldo. Reports indicate that this luxurious hotel is providing shelter to individuals who have been rendered homeless by the catastrophe.

Marrakech’s Dire Situation

The old town area of Marrakech, known for its UNESCO World Heritage status, has borne the brunt of the earthquake’s devastation. Numerous buildings and city walls have crumbled, and the narrow alleyways have posed challenges in locating and evacuating the injured. Throughout the city, public structures, town squares, and even roundabouts have been swiftly repurposed into emergency shelters, providing beds and essential supplies for those who have lost their homes. Cristiano Ronaldo’s compassionate gesture is not the sole contribution from the world of football in aiding those affected by this disaster. On Saturday, the Moroccan national football team took a proactive step by donating blood to support the earthquake victims. Moroccan defender Achraf Hakimi expressed solidarity by stating, “We are going through a difficult time for all our fellow citizens.
