It was a night of glitz and glamour as the Academy of motion pictures, arts and sciences held its 95th edition with Jimmy Kimmel making a return as the host for the third time.
‘Everything Everywhere All At Once’ led with eleven nominations and ended up winning seven awards to no one’s surprise, as the Sci-fi/Adventure film won Best Picture, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, Best Supporting Actor, Best Supporting Actress, Best Editing and Best Actress which made Michelle Yeoh the first Asian woman to win Best Actress at the Oscars.
Michelle Yeoh’s co-stars, Jamie Lee Curtis and Ke Huy Quan also triumphed in the supporting actress and actors categories. In the history of the Oscars, no other film has ever won the best picture, best director and three acting prizes.
‘All Quiet on the Western Front’ which got nine nods won only four in the Best Original Score, Best Production Design, Best International Feature Film and Best cinematography categories.
The highly contested Best Original song category was won by ‘Naatu Naatu’ from ‘RRR’ with music by M.M. Keeravaani, lyrics by Chandrabose beating ‘Hold My Hand’ from ‘Top Gun: Maverick’, ‘Lift Me Up’ from ‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’, ‘This Is a Life’ from ‘Everything Everywhere All at Once’, and ‘Applause’ from ‘Tell It like a Woman’.
Other winners of the night include Top Gun: Maverick for Best Sound, Avatar: The way of Water for Best Visual Effects, and Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio for Best Animated Feature Film, amongst others.
Rihanna however delivered a standout performance of ‘Lift Me Up’ at the award ceremony which took place at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles. Lady Gaga also performed ‘Hold My Hand’ from ‘Top Gun: Maverick’, amongst the other nominees for ‘Best Original Song’ who also took to the stage for a rendition from their movie soundtrack.
