Trolling has become the order of the day on social media! This single act can cause significant harm to the recipient of the troll which ultimately leads to depression, low self-esteem, self-harm and suicidal ideation and in extreme cases, suicide.
In slang, a troll is a person who posts or makes inflammatory, insincere, digressive, extraneous, or off-topic messages online, or in real life, with the intent of provoking others into displaying emotional responses or manipulating others’ perceptions.
The ladies of #yourviewtvc discussed the effects trolling has on people and why people ‘enjoy’ trolling.
Nihmatallah Akashat Zibiri stated that it is necessary to do unto others what we want others to do unto us. She said, “It’s not every post that somebody writes that you need to comment especially because you cannot see the other side and you’re only relying on wanting the other is saying. Moreover, there are different sides to a story.”
However, Tope Longe highlighted that the social media space is a beautiful space for everybody but it is also a place where good people will do good and bad people will do bad and some are caught in between and just follow the bandwagon and we don’t realise that there’s always an agenda in every social media post.
“Some people are on Instagram for the purpose of making and breaking homes. That is their agenda and there generate so many people following them that you don’t realize that you’re following an agenda we need to become more conscious of what is happening in our environment.
On the other side, there are people online that don’t have a life, work or joy but they come online, look for people that are happy and post negative comments and if you go to their page there are no posts, there are no existing or they have a private page but they are commenting insult.
I tell people that if they see a comment they don’t like, delete the comment and block the person because you have the right and the people that created the social media created a space for that to happen, you need to protect yourself.” she added
