Disgraced American singer/songwriter R. Kelly has won a mini legal battle against the federal authorities in the United States, as he has been removed from suicide watch at a Brooklyn jail, after he filed a lawsuit against the prison.
Kelly filed the lawsuit against the prison he was kept in after being convicted for sex crimes, claiming that he was being subjected to cruel and unusual punishment which violates his 8th Amendment rights after he was put on suicide watch at Brooklyn’s Metropolitan Detention Center.
In the lawsuit, he also insisted that he wasn’t even thinking of killing himself, claiming that he was placed in these harsh conditions because he’s a celebrity.
Just so you know, Federal authorities initially filed a motion opposing the suit, saying they would clinically assess Kelly for the duration of his suicide watch.
Metropolitan Detention Center Warden Heriberto Tellez who was named as one of the defendants in the lawsuit says he made the decision to remove Kelly from suicide watch following a clinical assessment, and no further details on the assessment were provided.
If you would recall, R. Kelly was sentenced to thirty years in prison on federal racketeering and sex trafficking charges.
