Workers from all facets of the economy filed out on Tuesday to start a two-day nationwide protest against the ongoing closure of public colleges, headed by the umbrella Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC).
The protest was based on unresolved issues of inadequate welfare and underfunding of the institutions between the various employees’ unions and the government, the public universities in Nigeria have remained closed for more than five months.
Nigeria’s public universities, meanwhile, have been shut down for more than five months as a result of protracted disagreements over inadequate institutional funding and care between the government and multiple labor unions.
Concerned about the ongoing shutdown and its effects, which include increased insecurity and unemployment, NLC called on its affiliates across the nation to organize a demonstration that would span the entire nation.
He also said that if the situation didn’t improve after the demonstration, the NLC would organize employees across the country to go on a warning strike, which might worsen the already fragile economy of the country.
Updates on the demonstration have revealed a significant worker and student turnout in cities around the country, including Jos in Plateau and Ilorin, the capital of Kwara State, both in the north-central region.
Olusola Falowo, the chairman of the SSANU at the University of Ilorin, had earlier on Tuesday encouraged his union’s supporters to take part in the large-scale demonstration.
He assured us that there would be no thugs present during the protest and that it would be peaceful.
