A member of the House of Representatives from Akwa Ibom state, Emmanuel Ukoete has defected from the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP to the All Progressives Congress, APC.
Ukoete announced his defection through a letter read by Speaker Yakubu Dogara, citing irreconcilable differences between the two factions of the PDP.
He was received by APC members amidst chants of the party’s slogan, while the opposition party members kicked against their loss.
Minority Leader, Leo Ogor, said the party would challenge the defection but House Leader, Femi Gbajabiamila, promptly countered Ogor’s argument.
This latest addition brings to 219 the number of APC members in the House.
Meanwhile, the Speaker swore in a new member, Johnson Aghuma representing Etsako Federal constituency of Edo state.
Oghuma replaces the Deputy governor of Edo state, Phillip Shaibu.
