Spotify has reintroduced the ability for free users to view lyrics for any song on its platform.
Previously, in May, the company had limited access to lyrics for free users to just three songs per month, following a trial that began last fall that required a paid subscription for full access. Now, Spotify has lifted this restriction, allowing free users unlimited access to song lyrics.
A Spotify spokesperson explained, “At Spotify, we’re always testing and iterating. This means the availability of our features can vary across tiers and between markets and devices.” The company plans to expand lyrics availability for free users in the coming weeks, enabling more people to enjoy this feature globally.
The initial move to limit lyrics access for free users faced backlash earlier this year, with many believing it was an attempt to encourage subscriptions to the revised tiers starting at $11 per month. During a recent earnings call, CEO Daniel Ek mentioned that improvements for free users were in the works, which now includes the return of full lyrics access.
“We are prioritizing enhancements in our free product pipeline based on existing performance in certain markets,” Ek stated. “Further improvements will be integrated into our free experience in the coming months.”
