DreamWorks Animation has officially announced that “Shrek 5” is in the works, set to hit theaters on July 1, 2026. The highly anticipated fifth installment in the beloved animated franchise will reunite the original central cast, with Mike Myers, Cameron Diaz, and Eddie Murphy reprising their roles as Shrek, Princess Fiona, and Donkey, respectively.
The movie will be directed by Walt Dohrn, who previously worked on “Shrek 2” and “Shrek the Third,” alongside co-director Brad Ableson, known for “Minions: The Rise of Gru”. Gina Shay and Illumination CEO Chris Meledandri are set to produce the film.
The announcement comes as no surprise, as Murphy had previously confirmed that he had already recorded some of his voice work for “Shrek 5” and was also working on a Donkey spin-off movie. The franchise, which has grossed over $4 billion worldwide to date, has become a cultural phenomenon, with the characters frequently referenced and used as memes by the generation that grew up with them.
With a long break since the last “Shrek” movie, “Shrek Forever After,” in 2010, the upcoming fifth installment has the potential to be a true cultural event. If executed well, “Shrek 5” could follow in the footsteps of recent box office successes like “Minions: The Rise of Gru” and “Inside Out 2,” which have appealed to both nostalgic adults and their children.
While plot details remain under wraps, the ending of “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish” teased a return to the world of Far Far Away, potentially setting the stage for Shrek and his friends to make their grand comeback. Fans eagerly await to see what adventures await them in the highly anticipated “Shrek 5,” set to hit theaters on July 1, 2026.
