The Nigerian political scene has witnessed a surge in anti-party activities among politicians as the political season rounds off with the gubernatorial and state assembly elections.

This trend has been observed across the political spectrum, from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to the main opposition party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and even the Labour Party (LP).

Anti-party activities refer to actions taken by politicians that undermine the interests of their political parties

This can include outright opposing the party’s candidates in elections to openly criticizing the party leadership. Anti-party acts have increased in frequency in Nigeria during the past few years, particularly among politicians who have fallen short in internal power struggles.

However, highlighting what he thinks  affected Dapo Abiodun’s Win In Ogun State, Babajide Kolade Otitoju blamed it on the former governor of the state,  Ibikunle Amosun’s Anti-Party activities

He said, “first and foremost, Ibikunle Amosun’s anti-party activities. Ibikunle Amosun decided to work for the party of the ADC Biyi Otegbeye and Biyi Otegbeye for more than 90 thousand votes. You can imagine that if 9o thousand votes went to Dapo, off course Dapo would have had a much more comfortable lead.

In 2019, Dapo won with just 20,000 votes, very close and this time around 13,915 and some of the balloting in Ogun east. Naturally, you would want to give Ogun East to the governor but we had Olatunde Adebutu even flogging the gi9bvernor in his own hometown though they are both from the same home town…

I think that the fact that Olatunde Adebutu has been working hard in that area was a factor that affected Dapo and also the Amosun Anti-Party activities.”
