A 54-year-old man named Mr. Ojo Joseph has been detained by Ondo State police detectives after he allegedly set five of his stepchildren on fire in the Fagun Crescent neighbourhood of Ondo City.
The suspect claimed that for months, his wife, who is also the mother of the kids, has been refusing to have intercourse with him.
According to reports, the wife had five children from her first unsuccessful marriage before giving birth to twins for the suspect.
Only minor injuries were sustained by the 18-month-old twins and their mother, who was also in the room that the suspect set on fire.
However, according to a different source, the suspect allegedly set the children’s sleeping room on fire after dousing it in gasoline due to a small argument with their mother.
Only one of the youngsters was fatally burned, while four others were saved by concerned individuals.
The 18-month-old twins and their mother, who also suffered injuries, were taken immediately to the Federal Medical Centre in Owo for treatment.
Funmi Odunlami, the state police commanders’ spokesperson, verified the terrible incident and said that the police investigator had arrested the offender.
Odunlami said that the suspect was arrested for a case of alleged arson and murder.
“On the reason adduced by the suspect, the police image maker said that he alleged he had a misunderstanding with his wife.
Odunlami claimed that the suspect had not yet explained the misunderstanding to police detectives.
After a thorough investigation, she said that the culprit would shortly be charged in court.
