Nigeria’s forward, Ademola Lookman, has been crowned the African Footballer of the Year by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) at their prestigious awards ceremony. The 27-year-old star made an unforgettable impact, leading Atalanta to a Europa League victory with a brilliant hat trick against Bayer Leverkusen in May. Additionally, Lookman played a pivotal role in Nigeria’s successful run to the Africa Cup of Nations final in Ivory Coast, scoring three goals during the tournament.
Born in London, Lookman has previously showcased his skills in the Premier League with Everton, Fulham, and Leicester City. After joining Atalanta in 2022, he scored 17 goals last season and has already netted 11 in the current campaign. Reflecting on his achievement, Lookman shared, “This award is a blessing; to be recognized as the best player in Africa is something incredible.”
Lookman follows in the footsteps of Nigeria’s previous winners, including Victor Osimhen, Nwankwo Kanu, Emmanuel Amunike, and others. The award was decided by a panel of national team coaches and captains, but voting details have not been disclosed.
Also, Zambia’s Barbra Banda was named African Women’s Player of the Year after overcoming gender eligibility issues and excelling in the 2023 Women’s World Cup and the Paris Olympics.
