Paramount Pictures released the trailer for Sonic the Hedgehog 3 on Tuesday, offering a fresh glimpse of the showdown between Sonic, voiced by Ben Schwartz, and his new rival, Shadow the Hedgehog, voiced by Keanu Reeves.
In this third installment based on the popular Sega video games, Sonic teams up with Knuckles (Idris Elba) and Tails (Colleen O’Shaughnessey) to confront Shadow, a mysterious villain with unique powers. Outmatched in abilities, Team Sonic must forge an unexpected alliance to stop Shadow and save the planet.
Shadow first appeared in the 2001 video game Sonic Adventure 2. Professor Gerald Robotnik, the grandfather of Sonic’s nemesis, Dr. Robotnik (Jim Carrey), created Shadow, who possesses incredible speed and the ability to manipulate space and time through Chaos Control. Although initially an antagonist, Shadow eventually becomes an ally in the video game series.
Sonic the Hedgehog 3 will hit theaters on December 20, following the success of its two predecessors, which collectively grossed over $319 million worldwide. Directed by Jeff Fowler, the film features a script by Pat Casey, Josh Miller, and John Whittington, based on a story by Casey and Miller.
Keanu Reeves joins the cast along with Krysten Ritter, whose role remains undisclosed. Other returning cast members include Natasha Rothwell, Shemar Moore, Tika Sumpter, and Elba. Neal H. Moritz, Toby Ascher, Toru Nakahara, and Hitoshi Okuno produce the film, with Haruki Satomi, Shuji Utsumi, Yukio Sugino, Fowler, Tommy Gormley, and Tim Miller serving as executive producers.
