Janet Jackson left Scott Mills in awe when she casually disclosed her unexpected A-list family ties during her appearance on the BBC Radio 2 Breakfast Show.
The iconic singer, who is currently on her Together Again tour, joined Mills to discuss her remarkable 50-year career in the entertainment industry and her recent performances.
As Stevie Wonder’s “Do I Do” played in the studio, Mills, 51, couldn’t help but inquire, “I heard a rumor—are you related to Stevie Wonder?”
To his astonishment, the 58-year-old singer confirmed not only her connection to Wonder but also revealed that she is cousins with both Tracy Chapman and Samuel L. Jackson, admitting that this is not widely known.
“That has blown my mind!” exclaimed Scott, to which Jackson responded, “So is Tracy Chapman. So is Samuel L. Jackson.”
“Is this blowing anyone else’s mind? So, Stevie Wonder…” he continued, and she confirmed, “Cousin.”
Mills then asked, “Samuel L. Jackson?” to which Jackson laughed and replied, “He would be a cousin too, well he’s not my brother!”
In another part of the interview, Jackson shared how she honors her late brother Michael during her tour with their 1995 song, “Scream.” Michael Jackson passed away in 2009 at the age of 50 due to cardiac arrest following an overdose of the anesthetic drug Propofol.
Scott remarked, “There is an amazing moment when you perform ‘Scream.’ Tell us about that.”
Jackson explained, “I love that song, and I guess it’s just a tribute to my brother and our time working together. Those memories resonate with the audience, and they go wild when he appears on the screen; it’s wonderful.”
The five-time Grammy Award winner is currently in the midst of a sold-out North American tour celebrating her illustrious 50-year career in music. The European leg of the tour will kick off in Paris on September 25 at the Accor Arena, with stops in the UK, Germany, and Belgium before concluding in Amsterdam on October 10.
Jackson will perform at the London O2 Arena on September 28 and 29, with special guest Wyclef Jean. She will also visit Birmingham on September 27, Glasgow on September 30, and wrap up her tour in Manchester on October 1.
