Disney and Pixar‘s “Inside Out 2” has become a box office sensation, defying expectations and making a significant impact on the film industry. After a slow start to the year, the animated sequel arrived to revive the box office, becoming one of the highest-grossing movies of all time.
Despite heavy competition from “Despicable Me 4,” “Inside Out 2” managed to hold onto the number two spot with an estimated $30 million domestically in its fourth weekend. The film dropped just 48% from the previous weekend, demonstrating its enduring appeal. It also pulled in $78.3 million overseas, bringing its total domestic gross to $533.8 million and its international total to $683.1 million, for a global total of $1.216 billion.
This achievement places “Inside Out 2” among the top 25 highest-grossing films of all time, surpassing “Iron Man 3” ($1.215 billion). It is now just behind “The Fate of the Furious” ($1.236 billion) and “Incredibles 2” ($1.243 billion). The sequel is expected to surpass both of these totals soon, making it Pixar’s biggest movie ever.
The film’s success has been remarkable, especially considering the challenges Pixar faced after the underperformance of “Lightyear” and “Elemental.” However, “Inside Out 2” has shown that Pixar remains a beloved and viable brand. The question now is how high it can climb. A finish of $1.5 billion worldwide is all but guaranteed, potentially surpassing “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” ($1.36 billion), “Barbie” ($1.44 billion), and “Top Gun: Maverick” ($1.49 billion) to become the third-biggest movie of the pandemic era.
If it can reach $1.52 billion, “Inside Out 2” will even overtake “The Avengers” ($1.51 billion) to land in the top 10 all time. Beyond that, it would need to surpass “The Lion King” ($1.66 billion) and “Jurassic World” ($1.67 billion) to move further up the charts. Whatever the outcome, “Inside Out 2” has already secured its place in the history books.
