Enzo Maresca, the head coach of Chelsea, expressed confidence that Enzo Fernandez will rejoin the team for their pre-season tour, despite ongoing disciplinary proceedings related to recent racism allegations.
Fernandez, along with some of his Argentina teammates, chanted a derogatory song mocking the heritage of the French team during an Instagram live session after their victory over Colombia in the Copa America final.
The video sparked controversy when Wesley Fofana, Fernandez’s Chelsea teammate, shared it on social media, labeling it “Football in 2024: uninhibited racism.” In response, Fernandez apologized on Instagram, acknowledging the offense caused, which prompted investigations from Chelsea and FIFA.
Maresca’s Stance
As Fernandez prepares to join Chelsea’s pre-season tour in the United States, Maresca believes the situation has been adequately addressed. “The player has apologized, and the club has done the same, so I don’t think there’s anything more to add,” he stated. Maresca emphasized that he does not believe there were any malicious intentions behind the actions of the players involved.
Chelsea captain Reece James also hopes the team can move past the incident. He noted that while it was a challenging situation, Fernandez has taken responsibility for his actions and apologized to those affected. James mentioned he would assess the situation further once Fernandez returns.

FIFA’s Investigation
FIFA has initiated an investigation into the matter, with a spokesperson condemning any form of discrimination in football. Chelsea striker David Datro Fofana also voiced his disapproval of racism, stating that such behavior has no place in sports.
In his apology, Fernandez expressed deep regret for the video, stating, “The song includes highly offensive language, and there is no excuse for these words. I stand against discrimination in all forms and apologize for getting caught up in the euphoria of our Copa America celebrations. Those words do not reflect my beliefs or character.”
French Football Federation’s Response
The French Football Federation announced plans to file a legal complaint regarding the incident, condemning the remarks made by the Argentina players. The federation’s president, Philippe Diallo, called for accountability from FIFA and the Argentina Football Association, emphasizing the seriousness of the remarks and their contradiction to the values of sport and human rights.
As the situation unfolds, both Chelsea and Fernandez focus on moving forward while addressing the implications of the incident.
