Swedish Hip Hop Star C.Gambino Fatally Shot in Gang Violence

In a tragic turn of events, C.Gambino, a prominent Swedish rapper recently crowned the country’s hip hop artist of the year, was shot dead in a gang-related incident in Gothenburg, Swedish police confirmed on Wednesday.

The 26-year-old rapper, whose real name was Karar Ramadan and who should not be confused with the American artist Childish Gambino, was attacked in a parking lot on Tuesday evening. Police have initiated a murder investigation, though no arrests have been made yet.

“This incident is linked to a gang conflict,” a police spokeswoman informed AFP, mentioning that C.Gambino “was known to police.” Images from the crime scene revealed bullet holes in a glass door in the parking lot.

C.Gambino’s latest track, “Sista Gang” (Last Time), released on May 31, has garnered 700,000 streams on Spotify, with the rapper attracting around a million monthly listeners.

“He was one of the greats in Swedish hip hop,” noted rap expert Petter Hallen to news agency TT, adding that the loss is a significant blow to both Gothenburg’s and Sweden’s rap scene. Hallen highlighted the tragedy of C.Gambino’s recent shift in lyrical themes, moving away from crime towards more personal and emotional expressions.

This incident follows the similar fate of another celebrated Swedish rapper, Einar, who was shot and killed in Stockholm in October 2021 amidst gang violence.
