You can now easily use ChatGPT on your Mac. OpenAI’s popular AI chatbot is accessible to all macOS users, as announced on Tuesday. This app was first introduced ahead of Apple’s WWDC 2024 in June, where OpenAI and Apple jointly announced integrations between ChatGPT and Apple’s operating systems for iPhone, iPad, and Mac.
Accessing ChatGPT on Mac is simple. After installing the new ChatGPT app, you can quickly call it up using the keyboard shortcut Option + Space. This shortcut will feel familiar to macOS users who use Command + Space to access Spotlight Search. Instead of a traditional search bar, you get a chat interface overlaid on your screen, offering access to a vast world of knowledge with just one button.
The launch of the macOS app coincided with the release of GPT-4o, OpenAI’s advanced generative AI model. GPT-4o handles text, speech, and video, with multimodal capabilities that justify the “o” for “omni” in its name.
Features of the ChatGPT Desktop App
The ChatGPT desktop app offers a new experience for both free and paid users. It can be called up with a simple keyboard shortcut, and users can take and discuss screenshots directly within the app. The macOS app also allows users to upload files and photos, speak to ChatGPT, and search through past conversations.

The app initially rolled out to Mac users starting with Plus subscribers. However, OpenAI announced in a post on X that it is now available to everyone.
This is not OpenAI’s only integration with Apple devices. At WWDC, it was revealed that Apple customers would gain access to ChatGPT from their iPhones and iPads, including through Siri and other AI-assisted areas like Writing Tools. These integrations, powered by GPT-4o, will roll out to Apple customers later this year with the launch of Apple’s newest operating systems.
