ChatGPT has launched a desktop app exclusively for macOS. OpenAI CTO Mira Murati announced this update during a recent event, highlighting the app’s new features and refreshed UI.
In the demo, users opened the ChatGPT desktop app in a small window alongside another program, asking questions about what’s on their screen by typing or speaking. ChatGPT then responded based on the visible content.

Users can activate ChatGPT with the Option + Space keyboard shortcut, take screenshots, and discuss them within the app. Both free and paid users can access the new app, but it is initially available only to ChatGPT Plus users. A broader rollout is expected in the coming weeks.
A Windows version of the app is planned for release later this year. ChatGPT is already available as an app on iOS and Android.
OpenAI also unveiled a new UI for ChatGPT on the web, featuring minor updates to the homescreen and message layout. “We want the interaction experience to become more natural and easy, focusing on collaboration with ChatGPT rather than the UI,” said Murati.
Additionally, OpenAI introduced its new GPT-4o model, which is free for all users.
