In a last-minute adjustment to the Nigeria Super Eagles’ squad for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers, head coach Finidi George has selected Ibrahim Olawoyin to take the place of Nathan Tella. Tella, a midfielder for Bayer Leverkusen, has withdrawn from the national team camp due to family reasons, opening the door for Olawoyin’s inclusion, according to the NFF.
Olawoyin, currently playing for Caykur Rizespor, earned his spot on the team following an outstanding season in the Turkish Super Lig. His impressive performances were pivotal for the newly-promoted club. Previously, Olawoyin shone for NPFL leaders Rangers International, and this season, he played a crucial role in central midfield for Rizespor, helping them achieve a respectable 9th-place finish in the league.
At 26, Olawoyin stood out as one of Nigeria’s top performers in the Turkish top flight, finishing the season with eight goals and three assists in 34 starts. His consistent high-level play has finally earned him a call-up to the national team, as Coach Finidi George seeks to strengthen his midfield options for the vital World Cup qualifiers.
The Super Eagles are counting on Olawoyin’s experience and scoring ability to guide them through a challenging qualifying campaign and secure a spot in the 2026 World Cup, after missing out on the 2022 tournament in Qatar.
