Finidi George Officially Unveiled as Super Eagles’ Head Coach by Sports Minister

Minister of Sports Development John Enoh formally introduced former Nigerian footballer Finidi George as the new Head Coach of the Nigerian national team, the Super Eagles, at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja.

Alongside him, former national teammate Daniel Amokachi and two foreign assistants comprise his coaching staff. Olatunji Baruwa remains the goalkeeper’s trainer, having previously held the same position under Jose Peseiro. The names of the two foreign assistants will be revealed before the Super Eagles’ 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying fixtures against South Africa and Benin.

The 53-year-old former Ajax star, who officially left his post as Enyimba head coach on Sunday to concentrate on his new job, expressed his immediate target of winning the next two qualifying matches against South Africa and Benin Republic. “The major step and target for me is the two World Cup qualifying matches against South Africa and Benin Republic,” said George. He appealed to the media for support, emphasizing the challenges ahead. “This is not an easy job for anybody, but if we work together, we will achieve,” Finidi added. George’s appointment follows the departure of Portuguese manager Jose Peseiro, under whom he served as an assistant during the last African Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast, where the team finished second.
