Lisandro Martinez (26) is poised to make his long-awaited return to Manchester United’s lineup this Wednesday after being sidelined since March. Manager Erik ten Hag revealed that Marcus Rashford (26), Bruno Fernandes (29), and Willy Kambwala (19) are also undergoing assessments to determine their fitness levels following injuries.
Raphael Varane, who announced his impending departure earlier on Tuesday, remains unfit for the upcoming Premier League fixture against Newcastle United. However, there is optimism that he may be ready to play by Sunday, with the manager targeting his full readiness for the FA Cup final against Manchester City on May 25.
“I believe Lisandro will make his comeback,” Ten Hag informed reporters, expressing confidence in the Argentine’s recovery progress despite limited appearances this season due to various injuries. “He has been participating in training sessions, and if all goes well, he’ll be part of the squad.”
Regarding Varane’s situation, Ten Hag stated, “We are aiming for his return in the upcoming games, particularly for Sunday’s fixture and, naturally, for the final game.” Manchester United currently sit in eighth place with 54 points, trailing Newcastle United by a narrow three-point margin in the race for Europa Conference League qualification.
“This upcoming match holds immense significance,” emphasized the Dutchman. “It directly impacts our standing, so securing a victory is paramount.”
Newcastle has emerged victorious in their last three encounters against Manchester United, boasting a clean sheet and six goals scored.
“We must exert maximum effort and determination to secure the win,” urged Ten Hag, highlighting the team’s resolve ahead of the crucial fixture.
