The popularity of “It Chapter One” and “It Chapter Two” and Bill Skarsgård’s portrayal of Pennywise the Clown have become iconic across multiple generations. Based on Stephen King’s novel, Skarsgård’s ability to independently move his eyes has undoubtedly contributed to increased levels of coulrophobia worldwide. Pennywise, haunting Derry, Maine, and feasting on its citizens for centuries, remains its most famous incarnation.
In 2023, Warner Bros. Discovery’s Max streaming service ordered a prequel series titled “Welcome to Derry.” However, the news broke that Bill Skarsgård will return to terrorize Derry, reprising his role as Pennywise the Dancing Clown. Skarsgård is not the only familiar face making a comeback; Andy Muschietti, Barbara Muschietti, and Jason Fuchs are also returning. Fuchs will serve as one of the co-showrunners alongside Brad Caleb Kane. Muschietti will direct four out of the nine episodes in the first season.
Details about the plot of “Welcome to Derry” remain under wraps. However, reports indicate that the series takes place in the 1960s, during the previous 27-year cycle before the events of “It: Chapter One.” It is uncertain whether Pennywise will undergo any visual changes, but deleted scenes from the films have already revealed earlier incarnations of the character, hinting at a possible return to one of those looks.
As this prequel is set in the same timeline as the “It” films, it will likely depict the events surrounding the incident at the Black Spot, where a racist cult burnt down a nightclub primarily frequented by Black soldiers from a nearby Army base. This may also provide an opportunity to introduce the extended family of the Losers Club before they became parents.
Bill Skarsgård will join previously announced cast members Taylour Paige, Jovan Adepo, Chris Chalk, and James Remar in the series. “Welcome to Derry” does not have a confirmed release date at this time.
