Warner Bros. Discovery’s First new ‘Lord of the Rings’ Film Expected in 2026

Andy Serkis is set to both direct and star in “Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum,” a new movie produced by Peter Jackson for Warner Bros.

Last year, Warner Bros. Discovery revealed plans for “multiple Lord of the Rings movies” with New Line Cinema, the production company behind Peter Jackson’s original trilogy based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s novels. Now, the anticipated release date for the first of these films has been announced.

During an earnings call, WBD CEO David Zaslav revealed that “Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum” is slated for a 2026 debut, promising to “explore storylines yet to be told.” Andy Serkis will helm the film and reprise his iconic role as Gollum, with Jackson, Fran Walsh, and Philippa Boyens onboard as producers.

Serkis, in a statement about the movie, hissed “yesssss, Precious,” while Jackson expressed his excitement, stating that it “is an honor and a privilege to travel back to Middle-earth.”

Currently, no other casting announcements have been made, and WBD hasn’t shared specifics about the film’s plot. But with its projected release date not all that far off, it shouldn’t be long before we start hearing more about what’s next for the man formerly known as Sméagol.
