Ryan Garcia, an American boxer, dominated Haney with three knockdowns in rounds seven, 10, and 11, securing a majority points win in Brooklyn, New York. Despite winning with scorecards of 112-112, 114-110, and 115-109, Garcia couldn’t claim Haney’s WBC light-welterweight title due to being overweight.
“You thought I was crazy? You all lost your minds,” Garcia said, addressing criticism for his behavior leading up to the fight. He extended his record to 25 wins and one loss, while Haney suffered his first professional defeat in 32 bouts.
At the post-fight press conference, Garcia revealed he had been drinking nightly before the bout due to a recent divorce, although he expressed confidence in his ability to win regardless.
Haney, 25, was disappointed with his performance but acknowledged his resilience after being knocked down. In the undercard, Sean McComb lost a split decision to Arnold Barboza Jr. in a controversial world-title eliminator.
Garcia’s victory came after the fighters had equal amateur records. He started strong, landing a left hook in the first minute that stunned Haney. While Haney initially gained control, Garcia’s aggressive approach ultimately overwhelmed him.
Haney, who previously held the undisputed lightweight champion title, expressed readiness for a rematch with Garcia.
