Former Chelsea manager Graham Potter has reportedly declined an offer to become the new head coach of Ajax. Sky Sports News revealed that Potter was the top choice for the Eredivisie club, and discussions had taken place between the parties. However, it seems Potter is not currently interested in joining Ajax.
This development follows a report four months ago by Sky Sports News that suggested Potter would be a prominent candidate for the Manchester United managerial position if Erik ten Hag were to depart this summer. Potter’s successful tenure at Brighton positioned him well for a potential role at Old Trafford, especially given his past collaboration with Dan Ashworth, whom United hope to recruit from Newcastle as their new Sporting Director.
Potter, aged 48, has been without a managerial position since departing from Chelsea a year ago. He has declined offers from Lyon and the Swedish national team, indicating a willingness to wait for the right opportunity before returning to coaching.
Before his time at Brighton and Chelsea, Potter achieved success with Ostersund in Sweden and later managed Swansea City in the Championship.
Meanwhile, Ajax has been without a permanent manager since sacking Maurice Steijn in October. John van’t Schip is currently in interim charge, with Ajax sitting sixth in the league, 33 points behind league leaders PSV. Recent performances include a heavy 6-0 defeat to rivals Feyenoord and elimination from the Europa Conference League following a 4-0 loss to Aston Villa last month.
