Introducing the Innovative National Identity Card
In collaboration with NIMC, CBN, and NIBSS, the Nigerian Federal Government is set to unveil a cutting-edge national identity card integrated with payment and social service capabilities through AfriGO. This groundbreaking initiative aims to revolutionize access to financial and social services for all.
Enhancing National Identity with Advanced Features
Aligned with the NIMC Act No. 23 of 2007, the new card, a General Multipurpose card (GMPC), will complement the existing National ID card with robust national identity features. By serving as tangible proof of identity, it empowers cardholders to access both government and private social services, thereby promoting financial inclusion and citizen empowerment.
Streamlined Access and Eligibility
To obtain the card, individuals must be registered citizens or legal residents possessing a National Identification Number (NIN). Crafted to meet ICAO standards, it will serve as Nigeria’s primary national identity card. Moreover, cardholders can conveniently link their cards to bank accounts, facilitating participation in various government intervention programs.
Commitment to Security and Data Protection
In a commitment to data protection regulations and public welfare, NIMC pledges to safeguard cardholders’ personal information and uphold compliance with international data security standards. Rigorous security measures will be in place to safeguard users’ data from unauthorized access.
Key Features of the New National Identity Card
Incorporation of a Machine-readable Zone (MRZ) compliant with ICAO standards for storing e-passport details. Moreover, the card will include the Identity card Issue Date and document number, aligning with ICAO regulations. Furthermore, integration of diverse features such as travel, health insurance information, microloans, agricultural support, food stamps, transportation, energy subsidies, and more will enhance its functionality. Additionally, the card will integrate Nigeria’s quick response code (NQR) containing the national identification number. Moreover, implementation of biometric authentication methods like fingerprint and picture recognition will serve as the primary means for identity verification via the card chip data. Additionally, provision of offline functionality will enable transactions in areas with limited network coverage or zero infrastructure connectivity. Finally, the card will offer dual functionality as both a debit and prepaid card, catering to the needs of both banked and unbanked individuals.
How to Obtain the Card
Citizens and legal residents can easily request cards online through commercial banks, participating agencies, or any NIMC offices nationwide, ensuring widespread accessibility.
