Polish tennis sensation Iga Swiatek, ranked number one in the world at 22 years old, displayed her dominance on Sunday by defeating Greece’s Maria Sakkari (28) with a convincing 6-4, 6-0 victory to claim her second Indian Wells WTA title. This triumph comes two years after her first victory over Sakkari in 2022.
In a rematch of their previous championship showdown, Swiatek showcased her prowess, particularly in the second set, securing her 19th career title and second of 2024.
Despite Sakkari’s resilient performance in the opening set, Swiatek’s powerful forehand sealed the set after 44 minutes. The remainder of the match saw Swiatek’s relentless momentum, as she swiftly clinched victory within just 24 minutes.
Swiatek’s recent successes mark a strong comeback from her disappointing early exit at the Australian Open in January. With titles at Doha and a semifinal appearance in Dubai, Swiatek has been steadily regaining her form. Her Indian Wells victory makes her the 10th woman to win the title twice, a remarkable feat yet to be achieved thrice by any player.
Reflecting on her achievement, Swiatek expressed gratitude to the Stadium Court crowd, acknowledging the significance of her eighth WTA 1000 level title.
Swiatek’s remarkable run in Indian Wells included a notable victory over Linda Noskova, who had previously defeated her in the Australian Open. Swiatek’s early break in the match set the tone for her dominant performance, ultimately securing victory with eight consecutive game wins.
Sakkari, who battled through a challenging semifinal against US Open champion Coco Gauff, commended Swiatek’s performance, acknowledging her opponent’s consistency and skill on the court. Despite her previous successes against Swiatek, Sakkari has been unable to secure a victory since 2021.
