Ramadan is known as the Holy month in the Islamic calendar, as the Islamic community comes together to fast and pray. Muslims abstain from eating and drinking from dawn to dusk, as fasting is known as one of the five pillars of Islam. Ramadan which began at the first sighting of the new crescent Moon, lasts for 29 to 30 days, depending on the next moon sighting. There are strict rules to follow during Ramadan that followers of Islam must abide by and if you’re simply curious about what is expected of Muslims during Ramadan, pay attention.
Eating rules during Ramadan state that food or drink consumption is not permissible during sunlight hours, water and chewing gum aren’t even allowed to be consumed. This allows considerably more time to work on being empathetic towards those who are less fortunate.
During Ramadan, residents and tourists must remain respectful to one another. Fighting or any form of public display of affection must be avoided as this can be offensive for those observing the Holy month. As Ramadan is the month of peace and serenity, getting into arguments or fights is terrible and swearing is also not allowed during Ramadan, as it is considered extra offensive.
Attend Qur’an study circles in your locality to get a better understanding of the words of Allah as you’re not just to recite the Qur’an but know its’ meaning and the message it contains for all of humanity. This will help you to adhere to Allah’s commandments.
It is advised to make more of an effort to dress modestly during the Holy month. Residents and tourists are advised against wearing revealing, tight and short clothes to ensure no one is offended during Ramadan. It is also advised that both men and women should cover themselves from their shoulders to their knees.
If you are invited to join someone for Iftar or offered a gift, it is best advised to accept it. Iftar, during Ramadan, is an auspicious time for those fasting, and a request to share a date is eaten with a glass of water sipped at the end of fasting, which is a sign of how valuable a relationship is. While there is no fine imposed on this, it could be offensive to the invited.
