Carlos Alcaraz, aged 20, clinched victory over Daniil Medvedev, aged 28, in the Indian Wells final, defending his title with a commanding 7-6(5), 6-1 triumph on Sunday.
This win not only breaks a title dry spell for the world number two, dating back to Wimbledon last summer, but also marks him as the first player since Novak Djokovic’s three consecutive victories between 2014-2016 to successfully defend a championship in the California desert.
Despite initially trailing 3-0, Alcaraz rallied back after a shaky start, securing the first set with a decisive tiebreak. The Spaniard’s dominance was further evident in the second set, where he overwhelmed Medvedev with an array of winners, sealing victory with a powerful forehand that went wide on match point.
Alcaraz, the second seed, showcased his prowess with 23 winners compared to Medvedev’s 11, particularly capitalizing on his opponent’s second serves.
During the trophy ceremony, Alcaraz expressed admiration for Medvedev, stating, “I enjoy playing these kind of matches with you,” while Medvedev, although briefly losing his temper with some fans, graciously congratulated Alcaraz and his team, acknowledging their impressive performance throughout the tournament.
Alcaraz’s journey in the Californian desert was eventful, marked by a bee sting to the forehead during a match, a notable victory over Jannik Sinner in the semifinals, and ultimately, a resounding triumph over the formidable fourth seed, Medvedev, in the final showdown.
