In response to Dani Alves’ recent conviction for rape, Barcelona has taken decisive action by removing him from their esteemed list of club legends, as reported by Diario AS. The official list, comprising 102 revered players including iconic figures like Joan Gamper and Lionel Messi, no longer includes Alves’ name. This notable alteration on the club’s website places him in stark contrast to recent inductees like Jordi Alba, Sergio Busquets, and Gerard Pique.
During his tenure with Barcelona, Alves made 408 appearances over two stints, amassing an impressive collection of accolades, including six league titles and three Champions League triumphs. His contributions on the field, however, have been overshadowed by the recent legal proceedings. Notably, Alves also showcased his talent at clubs like Sevilla, Juventus, and Paris Saint-Germain, while representing Brazil with distinction on the international stage, earning 126 caps.
The incident leading to Alves’ conviction occurred while he was contracted to Mexican club PUMAS, resulting in the immediate termination of his contract upon his arrest in January 2023. Despite the severity of the charges, Alves’ final sentence of just over four years fell short of the prosecution’s initial request of nine years, or the victim’s demand of 12. With approximately 12 months already served on remand, there is a possibility of Alves being released on licence in the near future.
