Jada Pinkett Smith has recently disclosed in a preview of her upcoming prime-time special on NBC News with Hoda Kotb that she and Will Smith have been living separately for the past seven years. She revealed that they had chosen not to publicly announce their separation back then as they were not emotionally prepared to do so. Importantly, they are not officially divorced at this time, but they’ve led separate lives since 2016.
In her conversation with Kotb, Jada Pinkett Smith emphasized that their decision to keep the separation private was due to their ongoing efforts to understand their evolving relationship dynamic and how best to navigate their partnership. She expressed, “We were still trying to figure out between the two of us how to be in a partnership, how to present that to people. We hadn’t quite figured that out.”
When asked about the reasons behind the marriage’s breakdown, she pointed out that they were both living under the illusion of who they thought they should be, and by 2016, they had grown weary of trying to uphold this facade.
As for the prospect of divorce, Jada Pinkett-Smith explained that they ultimately decided against it because of a solemn promise they had made to each other never to pursue divorce.
