The CEO Debbies Cake and Chow share a brief summary of how she grew her business and also gave tips to those hoping to start one day.
The business began unofficially while growing up with my grandma, she was always doing large-scale cooking so I learnt from her. When I got admission into uni, I started cooking for my department, for matriculations etc.
After graduation, I decided to go into it fully not only in catering but in adding baking to the package. So I started going for training, started from beginner class and I am here today. The business is three years now.
How can one get started?
You need to have enough to get ingredients, space and materials for cooking. 100k should take one through the start.
You can start by networking in schools and church and it’s important to also be a buyer. You can do it market your business via social media like Facebook, IG, Twitter etc.
It is important to get the right skills and have a mentor to help you know your part and grow. So move with the right people because in the space, people are always there to help and you should never give up.
Is this cooking skill more talented or nurtured?
I think it’s a little bit of both, you have the talent and you can nurture it. However, determination is very key and being concise
Taste or decoration which is more important to you?
Both matters, the taste and decoration should be of high quality. However, on social media most people prefer presentations.
