A man on Twitter shared his story on how was taken by surprise after his family told him he would have sent down his flight money to them to use and eat instead of him coming home to see them.
He wrote “I travelled from the US to Lagos, took a flight from Lagos to the east, then hired a taxi from the airport to my hometown, and the first question a relative greeted me with was, “this one you returned in the middle of the year, hope all is well?
“You should have just sent that flight money to us instead of wasting it on flight tickets. Anyway, you are welcome.” One day we will talk about family greed. The moment you travel abroad, you become a means to an end to some.
They don’t care if you die, just keep sending money whenever they ask and all will be well.
“At some point in your life while in the diaspora, you’ll understand that the money you send home is more valuable than your presence. When you figure out that part, you will also start hiding your financial success and purchases.
“A relative called to congratulate me for buying an iPhone 14. They copied the picture I posted to check the price of the phone then called to tell me. The message I got from it was that if I can afford that amount on a phone then I must send them a lot of money too.
“I didn’t know how to react but I later understood why some people overseas don’t share their success stories with their families. For those who succeeded and bringing a relative abroad, lmao! Some regret it.
“On the surface, it’s a beautiful thing to earn enough to take your relative abroad but they read a different meaning to it. They start plotting how to drain you financially. To them, If you can afford to take them abroad then you can buy them everything they want.”
