One of the top Vocal Coaches in Nigeria and a unique gospel artist, Naomi Classik, shared easy tips on how you can control your breath when singing or talking.
She also ministered to one of her great songs ‘ You are My Healer’, and talked us through her musical career and background.
Breath control is about using your diaphragm to fill your lungs with air and then gradually release it. Breath control exercises help you improve your lung capacity and power your high notes without losing too much breath on one note.
Here are tips to help you control your breath while singing
- Inhale through the nose for four seconds, hold this breath for eight seconds, and now exhale slowly for eight seconds.
- There must be no tension in the throat muscles in this process. Practice the art of snatching a breath quickly in between phrases while singing. This can be achieved through Kapalabhaati or panting.
- Lie on your back somewhere comfortable and take some diaphragm breaths. Inhale through the nose for 4 seconds, hold for 8 and exhale for 8 seconds again. Try to get as much air into your lungs using your diaphragm, as possible.
- Proper posture is not only essential to improving the sound of a singer’s voice, but it enhances the efficiency of their breathing as well.
- Making vocal warm-ups a regular part of a singing routine helps keep the voice in shape. Consistent repetition will provide you with strong breathing muscles to sing more efficiently in the future (especially for complex high notes). Best of all, the warm-ups can be as short and straightforward (or as complicated) as you like.
- A hissing exercise is a great way to slow your breathing down, so you can lower your voice when a song demands it.
