In line with the mental health celebration this week, we have nutritionist Oluwakemi Jeje to discuss Nutrition and Mental Health.
It is established that to boost your mental health, you must focus on eating a balanced diet as our brain is part of our body and the nutrients that our brain ride on is provided by the food that we eat.
There are also other factors that affect our mental health like,
- Genetic Disposition
- Environment
- Social isolation or loneliness
Eating plenty of fruits and vegetables along with foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids, such as salmon.
Dark green leafy vegetables in particular are brain-protective. Nuts, seeds and legumes, such as beans and lentils, are also excellent brain foods.
Here are some foods that affect our mental health negatively
- Junk – “Junk food” is a term used to describe food that is high in calories from sugar and/or fat, and possibly also sodium, but with little dietary fibre, protein, vitamins, minerals, or other important forms of nutritional value. It is also known as HFSS food (high in fat, salt and sugar).
Junks create a surge in our sugar level and it deeps almost immediately. Junks give us the same feeling as when we are on drugs.
When you consistently have love energy and see a need to jump on Junk, it might read mental health.
Here are fruits that are good for your mental health
- Healthy Oil
- Seed oil
- Vegetable Oil
- Avocado pear
- Local Pear
- Coconut oil
It’s important to take everything on balance and ensure to take in a lot of oxygen.
