Residents of Akinwunmi Street, Mende, Maryland, Lagos, have debunked the report that a building in the area sank with nine ladies following heavy rain on Monday morning.
Mr. Daniel, the landlord of the storey building stated to have sunk, said the news was false and misleading.
He told FIJ that the house had remained how it was in 2008 when he moved in. “News that the building collapsed is fake, so is the news that people were rescued.
No such thing happened. I have been living in the estate for 14 years,” he said. “Today’s rain was only excessive, and it is said to have been caused by the ongoing Maryland-Opebi link bridge construction which resulted into a flood.
“In all 14 years of staying here, this has never happened before. The usual thing that happens is that the street gets flooded and then the water shrinks with time.”
FIJ had visited the scene after Oluwafemi Oke-Osanyitolu, Director General of the Lagos State Government Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), prompted an erroneous report with his confirmation of the story circulating in the media.
Daniel said that NEMA and LASEMA rescued no one in the house.
