Emotions are how we respond to life – whether good or bad events. However, emotions do not happen to us without our will. In a quick monday motivation chat with Ezeogu Chukwuemeka on Wake Up Nigeria, he breaks down the simplest way to master your emotion.
According Chukwuemeka, there’s are 5 different stages on how we react when things happen.
- There’s an impact,
- I think!
- I feel,
- I decide,
- And finally, I act based on your decision.
“The quality of your decision is now dependent on the first two steps in the process.” Chukwuemeka says all 5 steps are processed in ‘micro-seconds’
“If you’re going to change, master, control or know how to live in a very wholesome state emotionally, it has nothing to do with the environment, it has everything to do with you!”
“Nobody can make you angry. Nobody can make you do anything. You choose to do the things you do, after you have thought and felt.”
In mastery, Between impact and response, there’s a small time called ‘pause’. Take that information away from your hippocampus (the part of your brain that stores working memory) and run it through your frontal cortex (thinking brain) to dissect and elaborate on the impact.
Chukwuemeka added that it’s necessary to pause whenever there’s an impact. What is the outcome you want in every situation?
“When you pause, you choose your response. Emotional intelligence is about making quality decisions.”
