Hypertension, also known as high blood pressure (HBP), is a long-term medical condition in which the blood pressure in the arteries is persistently elevated. High blood pressure usually does not have symptoms as stated by Dr. Simisola on #YourViewTVC.
The World Health Organization revealed that Nigeria is topping the list of African countries, with hypertensive adults.
Since hypertension has been a major health problem in Nigeria, Dr. Simisola Ajasa took the couch this morning on TVC’s entertainment show, Your view, to discuss how hypertension can be managed.
She initially defined hypertension as a consistent high blood pressure.
She then mentioned the four risk factors of hypertension as primary, secondary, modifiable and non modifiable. Here are the things she said about these four risk factors.
- Primary factors- they are found in old people.
- Secondary factors- it is not natural, it is triggered by something that is affecting you like kidney problem, fibroid e.t.c.
- Modifiable factors- They are caused by our lifestyle e.g eating of junks, excess intake of salt, taking of alcohol, high cholesterol and smoking.
- Non modifiable factors- Black race get hypertensive than the white race. men also have high risk of hypertension than women and it can be caused by genital factor.
She noted that hypertension does not have specific symptoms, but it is manageable.
“Normal blood pressure is 120/80, anything above 140/90 is leading to hypertension. The symptoms are not specific, some people come to the hospital for something different and find out they are hypertensive. Hypertension can be properly managed and you can live your life normally.”
She concluded that hypertension can be managed with medication and change of lifestyle like, reducing intake of salt,no smoking, reduce drinking of alcohol and doing some work out.
