The House of Representatives has summoned Nigeria’s Police Chief, Ibrahim Idris, over an alleged diversion of 7.2 billion naira in the 2016 budget.
The lawmakers fell short of issuing a bench warrant against the security chief, and have given him a January the 19th date to appear, after several failed attempts.
The Committee isn’t comfortable with what it says is the refusal or deliberate failure of the IGP to honour its invitation over alleged
violations of the 2016 Appropriation Act, the Public Procurement Act and the Fiscal Responsibility Act.
The lawmakers are seeking answers to why the Police purchased sixty four Toyota Hiace Commuter vehicles instead of ten Armoured Personnel Carriers as approved in the 2016 budget
The Committee also accuses the Police hierarchy of diverting six billion naira approved for the rehabilitation of 102 police stations to other unauthorised spendings.
The lawmakers want the IGP arrested for allegedly disregarding its invitations.
But some members call for caution.
The House condemned the refusal or failure of the IGP to honour the Committee ‘s invitations and handed him a January the nineteenth date as last invite over the matter.
