INEC to begin online registration, transfer of voters’ cards

TVC E. The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC will soon begin a digital process for the registration, transfer and relocation of Permanent Voter Cards, (PVCs).

This was disclosed by INEC chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu during a media conference in Abuja over the weekend.

Yakubu said further that the digitization of the process has become necessary due to an apparent lack of interest shown by Nigerian voters.

“It (PVC collection) is a big issue. I have been receiving monthly returns from the state offices, but sometimes there would be 400,000 PVCs uncollected in a state and the monthly return would show only 30 as having been collected,” Yakubu said according to Vanguard.

“People don’t want to collect. It has to be tied to something, maybe, election is around the corner and they wish to vote, there is an incentive for them to do so. The director of ICT was telling me that the issue of cards is always tied to something,” he added.

Yakubu also revealed that in some areas, as many as 400,000 PVCs had been left uncollected.
