Domestic chores and the spiritual upkeep of the family in marriages should not be based on gender, an online poll by TVC Entertainment has shown.
Recall that renowned cleric and General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Pastor E.A. Adeboye in a famous sermon told members of his church that men should not marry a woman who cannot cook.
The Christian leader also said any woman who cannot pray for one hour at a stretch should not be considered for marriage.
The pastor delivered the sermon one year ago but a footage of the message resurfaced online this month, sparking a huge debate on social media with many feminists dismissing the pastor’s position as archaic.
In the poll conducted on TVC Entertainment’s website, 44.44% of respondents opined that since marriage is a partnership and not slavery, house chores like cooking should not be exclusive to the woman alone. This group also believe that prayers should not be left alone to women.
Conversely, 25.93 % of respondents pitched their tents with Pastor Adeboye. This category held that it is the sole responsibility of the woman to cook and also uphold the home with prayers.
14.81%, however, argued that the two criteria are inconsequential in marriage as long as love was the foundation of the union while another 14.81 % stated that marriage is not a necessity.
