It was a ‘mission accomplished’ for Yusuf after he was tasked to win both friendlies against Mali and Luxembourg which would enhance his chances of clinching the country’s top post.
The attacking trio of Brown Ideye, Kelechi Iheanacho and Odion Ighalo all scored yesterday as the Super Eagles beat Luxembourg 3-1 in a friendly match.
The Eagles, who had also beaten their Malian counterparts in another test game last Friday, were keen to sustain the momentum against their hosts in Tuesday’s game.
Interim Super Eagles Coach, Salisu Yusuf, made six changes to the team that started out the game against Mali and that seemed to work out well.
Ideye, who was given a starting role proved his mettle, scoring the first goal of the game in the 36th minute.
That was the first goal for the former West Bromwich Albion man for the national team in almost three years.
Though the Eagles dominated play, they only had a 1-0 lead going to half time.
In the second half, Iheanacho added another goal for Nigeria to make scores 2-0.
However the hosts pulled one back after a defensive slip by Kenneth Omeruo.
Nigeria nonetheless ended the game with a two-goal cushion as late substitute Odion Ighalo scored to make the game end 3-1 in favour of the super eagles.
