TVC E. The Rivers state chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has declared President Muhammadu Buhari an honorary son of the Niger Delta region.
Commenting on the president’s one year in office, the party noted that Buhari has demonstrated his great love for the region and determination to fast-track its development.
Leadership reports that the APC commended the president in a statement made by the party’s chairman in the state, Davies Ibiamu Ikanya, on Monday, May 30, in Port Harcourt.
According to the APC, the inclusion of the Calabar–Lagos rail line and Calabar–Itu road in the 2016 budget, as well as the impending Ogoni clean-up exercise prove that Buhari has done enough within a short period to be named a Niger Delta son.
“The importance of this singular project (the Calabar–Lagos rail line ) towards the general economic enhancement of the region and the country at large cannot be over-emphasized.
With the inclusion of the death trap called Calabar – Itu road and other projects of prime benefit to the region in the 2016 budget and the kick-starting of the Ogoni clean-up exercise in the next few days.
“The Ogoni clean up, which the past administrations including the high corrupt administration of Dr Jonathan though a son of the region wickedly and totally ignored, it will not be out of place therefore if we declare President Muhammadu Buhari as a true friend and son of the Niger Delta region.
With this development, all the efforts of Chief Wike to frustrate this exercise now amounts to noting,” the statement read in part.
Meanwhile, Amina Mohammed, the minister of environment, has assured Nigerians that Buhari is fully committed to the clean-up of the oil-rich Ogoniland as recommended in the United Nations Environment Programme report.
As a demonstration of his commitment to the clean-up exercise, the minister confirmed that the president would be in the region on Thursday, June 2, to flag off the Ogoni clean-up programme.
