A lot of times, people spend their lives living to fit into these stereotypes at the expense of their own happiness and mental health.
It is to break stereotypes like this that the Purple 50/50 Campaign was created. Statistically, on the Gender Equality Index, Nigeria ranks 118 out of 134 countries.
This shows just how far behind we are and how hard we have to work to change people’s perceptions and help them unlearn the unhealthy things they have learnt over years.
The Pulse strivia theme visited Kano, Enugu, Kaduna and Lagos to ask randomly selected people the question: “Is it okay for a woman to propose to a man?”
As usual the answers were funny and varied, though they went a long way to show how many Nigerians view the issue of marriage, proposals and ‘control’ in a union of man and woman.
