$620,000 bribe: Farouk Lawan’s trial begins on Wednesday

FaroukTVC E.  Folu Olamiti ICPC spokesperson, confirms it that, Farouk Muhammad Lawan Nigerian politician and four-term member of the House of Representatives for the Bagwai/Shanono Federal Constituency of Kano State will be on the hot seat tomorrow as his trial on fuel subsidy begins.

Lawan is alleged to have received $620,000 bribe from oil magnate Femi Otedola by the Independent Corrupt Practices and other Related Offences Commission (ICPC).

Folu Olamiti said: “The trial will commence tomorrow at the Federal Capital Territory High Court on the seven-count charges against Farouk Lawan.”

Olamiti said the trial will come up before Justice Adebukola Bankojo of the FCT High court in Gudu district of Abuja.

Also joined in the charges bordering on obtaining bribe from Otedola to change the committee’s report in favour Zenon oil and gas limited is the then committee’s secretary Boniface Emanalo.

Lawan and Emenalo were first arraigned before an Abuja court, the case was further taken to the Appeal Court and then later the duo were later re-arraigned before Justice Banjoko of in June 2014.

The commission had accused the duo of conspiring to receive a gratification to the tune of $3 million for Otedola in order to remove his name from a list of companies involved in the oil subsidy scam.

The offence, the ICPC said violates the provisions of Section 26 (1) (c) of the Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Act, 2000.

The offence is also punishable under Section 8 (1) of the same act.
