INEC postpones 2019 general elections to February 23 and March 9

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has called off the elections slated to hold today February 16th 2019 and Saturday, 2nd March 2019.

INEC Chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, addressing reporters early hours of this morning in Abuja, the nation’s Capital said that the polls would not go on as planned due to some challenges encountered by the commission.

He explained that the decision to postpone the polls followed a careful review of the implementation of the logistics and operational plans put in place for the exercise.

He said proceeding with the election as scheduled is no longer feasible and as result of this, the election was postponed by a week.

Consequently, a new date has been fixed for the presidential/National Assembly and the governorship/states assemblies election.

Presidential and National Assembly elections will now hold on Saturday, February 23 while the governorship and state assembly elections will hold on Saturday, March 9.
